BARKAS is a creative team, Ann Bartok and Olena Kassian; we integrate re-purposed materials with new.
Most Barkas pieces start with the process of mixing wood fibre with glue; when combined with discarded materials, this foundational method leads us to unique sculptural forms – we say “lead” because the mulch has a life of its own, often dictating the direction of the piece, so we find ourselves in an exchange between its natural process and our vision, resulting in a successful resolution only when both parties achieve balance. Our interest in metal scrap increasingly informs our work.
Our shadow screens integrate found elements within a frame covered in translucent acrylic or glass; the resulting transmission of light generates enigmatic imagery.
The collaboration between Olena and Ann makes for a very diverse partnership. Whether for private residences or corporate and hospitality situations, we welcome the opportunity to work with architects and interior designers to build pieces that will meet the requirements of colour, size and configuration appropriate to specific sites – we love a challenge!
